When might surgery be needed?

01 Symptoms and/or complications of gallstones

This includes inflammation of the gallbladder  (cholecystitis), infection of the bile duct (cholangitis) and inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

These conditions often cause pain, and surgery to remove the gallbladder is the most effective way to prevent further problems.

02 Gallbladder masses/polyps

These may be recommended for surgical removal because of the concern for gallbladder cancer.

What's involved?

Access to, and removal of, the gallbladder is done through small incisions on your abdomen.

There are a few risks associated with the operation that will be discussed with you beforehand so that you are fully informed.

The operation can be done as day case, so you're not out of action for too long.
